Katherine Murch, better known as “Katie”, is known for her confidence, optimism, and zest for life. She was Miss Deaf Texas, first runner-up to Miss Deaf America, and the youngest sales manager in a corporation where she won two awards in the first year. She dreams of owning an ice cream shop when she retires. She loves to travel, read, watch hockey, snowboard, music, laughing with her friends, and dancing in the rain.

Katie was born deaf into a hearing family in South Texas. Fortunately, her mother was taking ASL while pregnant with her. Katie got early exposure to sign language and grew up in a bilingual environment where her family never saw her as disabled, just Katie for the Katie she was. She excelled in honor classes in mainstreamed school. She began college early where she eventually graduated from Texas A&M Corpus Christi in 2009. While earning her double bachelors degree in Management and Marketing, she also pursued her passion of acting and public speaking.
As Miss Deaf Texas, she reached over 150,000 people and landed a few roles in indie films and local commercials. She put her acting career on hiatus when living in San Francisco as the Sales Manager for ZVRS. She now lives in Aspen, Colorado where she plays as the Outreach Coordinator at her favorite place in the world, Aspen Camp. She is now getting back in acting and making vlogs. She is living the life she has always dreamed of.
Serious Questions:
What got you into acting?
I think it’s a combination of a few things. Growing up, I was always in the center of attention and enjoyed it. My mother was very creative, especially since we were very poor, with things to do at home and always supported my artistic skills. When I attended Aspen Camp in Colorado, my passion for acting was inspired and I landed all the lead roles. I made a movie during my summer study at Texas School for the Deaf. Iris, my former modeling agent, encouraged me to compete with thousands of others at an acting expo. I was the only deaf person there and I was really shocked that I won Best Teen Female Actor. There, I started auditioning for roles in movies and commercials. Acting really comes naturally to me and it’s something I enjoy doing.
I’m now also getting into script writing for movies and music videos. It’s quite fun.
What is your best performance that you’re proud of so far?

I would say winning the MB Expo, as mentioned earlier, was my biggest moment so far. It was such an inspiring moment to be recognized as the best actor out of thousands of other hearing actors. Another moment that I’m also fond of is when I auditioned for an indie film, Pressure Points, in Corpus Christi. A group of us were cast into an improv situation where I was a tourist at a gas station that was being robbed. I got into character and broke out crying and shaking to the point where I had to reassure the audience and director that I was just acting. Unfortunately, I was not cast for the role because I didn’t fit the Hispanic look they were looking for.
What is the most rewarding experience you have had and what made it so?
That’s a tough question. Every day is a rewarding experience for me. I’m so grateful to be able to wake up, breathe in fresh air, do what I love to do, and sleep under the stars. I’m known for being very positive and loving the little things in life. I always say, “think happy thoughts!” I bet my sister rolls her eyes after reading this.
Who or what inspires you and why?
Mother Nature is my biggest inspiration. I’m a huge believer in animal medicine and connecting with nature. When I’m feeling down (which is rare) or unsure of what to do, I sit outside and let nature speak to me. It never fails. Nature also inspires me with new ideas and thoughts that really resonate deeply within me.
My mother also inspires me. She has worked her butt off her whole life and she’s my biggest role model. I don’t know what I would do without her. (Love you Mama!)
What are your future plans?
Hah! I really don’t know. I go with the flow and let life take me where I’m supposed to go. I think life is a lot more interesting and fun that way. When I look back on my happiest or successful moments, I realize that it was because I let things happen the way they did rather than forcing it.
I’m also a huge believer of visualizing. My vision board is the first and last thing I see every day. Right now it’s full of fitness, adventure, laughter, love, and fun. I guess you can say I’m already living the future. 😉
I do dream of being a Chief Marketing Officer, winning an Oscar, and/or opening up an unique ice cream shop. Who doesn’t love ice cream?! And yes, all of these are also posted on my vision board.
*Special Question: What gave you the idea for “Things Hearing People Say” a hit on YouTube?
I’ve wanted to make vlogs for a long time but was distracted by so many things. I’m quite the perfectionist so I tend to hold back my work until it’s absolutely perfect in my eyes. I almost didn’t post “Things Hearing People Say” because the sound was messed up and I was (and still am not) satisfied with the lighting and video quality. But I’m glad that I did and that people got a good laugh out of it. Nothing is better than brightening someone’s day and I can’t believe I managed to do that for over 12 thousand people within 36 hours! I’m still flabbergasted.

Completely Silly Random Questions:
What would I find in your refrigerator right now?
Right now it’s stuffed with meat. Eew! Haha! I’m a vegetarian (celebrating my 11th year anniversary soon!). The refrigerator at Aspen Camp broke down so we had to put all the foods in our personal refrigerators and unfortunately, for me, mine was the only one that could fit all the meat.
Normally it’s pretty empty because I travel so much!
You are invited to a large cocktail party at a country club. When you arrive, the room where the party is being held is already over half full of people. How do they react to you when you enter the room?
I love parties! When I’m around people, my lips automatically curl up into a smile. I hope it’s contagious enough to make them smile back. It normally is. After mingling for a bit, I know a few people will compliment my high heels. I’m such a shoeholic. But the funny thing is that even though I love being a social butterfly, I also love to sit in the back and people-watch; especially at a cocktail party at a country club.
You have the choice to live with a gorilla who knows sign language or a dog who sings lullabies, which do you choose?
I would live with both because the dog can sing my favorite lullabies and the gorilla can interpret for me! But if I had to choose only one, I would choose the dog because I would feel so guilty trapping a wild animal at home.
If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would buy?
I would donate a huge portion to it to Aspen Camp, the place that greatly inspired me to be who I am today. Knowing that my investment is helping other kids find themselves and develop confidence is better than anything else money can buy.
If aliens landed in front of you and, in exchange for anything you desire, offered you any position on their planet, what would you want?
I would nicely ask them to go on their way and let me keep living the life of my dreams. But before they do, I would like them to give me a tour of the universe, their life, and let me stargaze with a 360 view. Wouldn’t that be amazing!?
My favorite part: The questionnaire concept was originated by Frenchtelevisionpersonality Bernard Pivot on his show Apostrophes, after the Proust Questionnaire.
The ten questions Lipton asks are:

      1.   What is your favorite word? Saudade. Look it up!

2.     What is your least favorite word? “Have” as in “have to”. I always tell people that there are two things you “have to” do in life: be born and die. Everything else is a choice so whatever we do, we did it because we wanted to, not because we had to.
3.     What turns you on? Intellect. I love being challenged and stimulated mentally. Having good discussions with open-minded and honest people are one of my favorite things to do.
4.     What turns you off? Close-mindedness. Fakeness. Lying. Disrespect. Drama. Smoking.
5.     What sound or noise do you love? Music. I’m nuts for music, especially rock, pop, and techno. There isn’t a day I’m not listening to music.
6.     What sound or noise do you hate? Nothing really because if it’s annoying me, I take off my hearing aids. Hah! I love being deaf.
7.     What is your favorite curse word? “Fuck.” It rolls off your tongue or fingers so nicely whether you mean it in an offensive or romantic way.
8.     What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? I would love to be a beer maker, especially for sour beer.
9.     What profession would you not like to do? Make shoes because I’ll end up keeping all of them and never make a profit.
10.  If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates? I really have no idea.
