HEARD supports Deaf, Deaf-Blind, Blind, etc. prisoners. Lately, HEARD has been working extremely hard to establish Deaf Culture Libraries in prisons across the nation. These libraries will have information on American Sign Language (ASL), Deaf Culture, Deaf Studies, interpreting resources, basic rights, legal rights, the list goes on.
Why exciting news? A warden in Louisiana took notice of our hard work and the positive impact that having Deaf Culture resources would have & wants our support creating a library there! HEARD needs YOUR help.
What can you do? Donate new or used books, DVDs, magazines, etc., focusing on ASL, Deaf Studies, Deaf Culture, Basic Rights, Legal Rights.
This would allow prisoners to have educational opportunity equal to hearing prisoners and empower Deaf prisoners as well. The materials can be from any grade range. Deaf Culture Library is not for Deaf people only! The library is for Deaf AND hearing empowerment. We believe it will lead to better understanding between deaf and hearing people in the prisons.
If you have these or other English or ASL literature you would be willing to donate, please send it to:
PO BOX 1160
Washington, DC 20013
It is important to know that the books must be soft covered only. The prison will not accept hard cover books. Only soft cover books will be allowed.
If you have any questions about this project, please e-mail us at email@example.com.
Thank you in advance for your donations as well as continued support!
