We need to talk about the D-word. What is the D-word? Deaf. The word is Deaf. Why are we so afraid of it? Why are we afraid to talk about deafness and hearing loss in general?
I’m trying to understand this cultural fear of deafness (and many other dis/abilities and differences in general) and why people are ashamed to admit when they can’t hear or understand something or someone. I believe that by addressing this fear and how much emphasis society places on ability we can begin to destigmatize deafness and make it a more socially acceptable topic of conversation.
