Deaf rights rally planned at Capitol Wednesday

Deaf, hard of hearing and deaf and blind people and their allies will rally for civil rights Wednesday at the Capitol in Lincoln at the same time rallies take place at more than 45 capitols across the nation.

The rallies are set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and participants hope to raise awareness of issues the deaf community faces, including the disappearance of American Sign Language as the language of instruction for deaf children, denial of employment opportunities, discrimination in the workplace, lack of access to public services or appropriate accommodations in hospitals and doctor offices.
