SALISBURY, Md. – A handful of Gallaudet University men’s and women’s track and field members attended the Salisbury University Elite Meet here Thursday evening in an attempt to qualify for the 2016 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships being held May 26-28 in Waverly, Iowa. In the end, no Bison will make the trip to Iowa.
Senior Alex Close (Tallahassee, Fla.) finished third in the 800-meter run, in his final event in the buff and blue, as he crossed the finish line in 1:57.94, just over four seconds from the first-place time.
Sophomore Toraneau Varice (Deerfield Beach, Fla.), GU’s top sprinter, finished sixth in the 200-meter dash (22.77) and just missed the final for the 100-meter dash with his preliminary time of 11.28 seconds.
Freshman Jamal Garner (Jacksonville, Ill.) had a busy day competing in three different events. He finsihed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.62 seconds.
In the field events, Garner finished fourth in the shot put with a top throw of 12.33 meters (40 feet, 5.5 inches). His best throw was achieved on the third of six tosses. He fouled on the final three attempts.
Garner placed seventh in the discus with a top throw of 34.03 meters (111 feet, eight inches). His top throw was achieved on the first of six tosses.
This concludes the season for the Gallaudet men’s track and field team.
