Gumm, Hudson chosen as April Bison of the Month presented by GIS

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department has announced the April Bison of the Month recipients presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS). Sophomore outfielder Kelsey Hudson (Blissfield, Mich.) of the softball team and sophomore outfielder Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas) of the baseball team were selected for their extraordinary displays in the month of April.

Hudson led the softball team with a .420 batting average in 17 games in April. She went 21-for-50 at the plate including four doubles, four triples, seven RBI, 10 runs, two walks and five stolen bases. She also boasted a .957 fielding percentage in the outfield where she made 22 putouts and only one error. Hudson had at least one hit in 13 of 17 games in April and had two or more hits in seven of those games. Her top game was April 19 when she went 2-for-3 against Wilson College when she hit a double and a triple while driving in three runs and scoring twice in an 8-5 victory.

“When Kelsey gets on the field, she shows strong determination with a positive attitude that pushes her to do her best. She is a fighter,” said Gallaudet softball coach Joseph Kolcun. “Her commitment to practice, improving her hitting and defense has exceeded the coaches’ expectations. We are truly proud of her!”

Gumm led the baseball team with a .377 batting average in 15 games in April. He went 23-for-61 at the plate including three doubles, one triple, eight RBI, 14 runs, six walks and four stolen bases. In the outfield he posted a .906 fielding percentage as he made 27 putouts, two assists and made three errors. Gumm had at least one hit in 12 of 15 games and had two or more hits in eight of those games. He collected three hits and two RBI, on two separate occasions last month, to help the Bison secure two conference wins. In a 13-7 win over Cazenovia College he went 3-for-4, scored three times, hit a double and drove in two runs.

“Kyle really finished the season strong after starting slowly. I am proud of the fact that he was able to make the adjustments and started hitting the the ball to the opposite field more often which led to a  strong improvement in his hitting. Now, he just needs to stay consistent and carry it over to the next season,” said Gallaudet baseball coach Curtis Pride.

These are the eighth, and final, Bison of the Month awards for the 2015-16 athletic season. Each month the Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports.
