I am not a certified audiologist and I know little about audiology. A lot of people message me asking if they qualify as “D/deaf” or “Hard of Hearing.” Truth be told, I never know how to respond because it isn’t up to me to decide who fits and who doesn’t. While I believe that the non-hearing community expands to include people who are D/deaf, Hard of Hearing, have Auditory Processing Disorder, and have hearing loss, I’m also aware that many people have not gotten their hearing checked and oftentimes self-diagnose or look for somebody to say that they are “D/HH.” This isn’t to shame or condemn anyone but to urge those who really want to know to go get their hearing checked and further the dialogue on the complexities of hearing.
