ALLIANCE, Ohio — Lisa Best can’t even begin to describe how incredible this week has been for her mom Nora. She can finally hear after 64 years of silence.

“My mom has been deaf her entire life. And the people that we’ve met, they’ve had hearing aids up until 40 or so and then when that doesn’t work anymore they get the implant. Well for my mom, she’s never heard anything her entire life, like ever,”┬áLisa said.

That all changed though on Thursday when Nora was fitted for a cochlear implant. Lisa said she wasn’t planning to record the experience, but ultimately decided to. It’s a good thing she did because she managed to capture the first time Nora heard any kind of sound.

“It’s just amazing. You know I don’t know what it’s like not to hear and we take so much for granted, we really do. But when you see the video it’s just so heart warming and I hope that it shows other people that things are possible no matter what disability you have,” Lisa said.

She said her mom will never be able to understand speech, but she will be able to recognize environmental sounds like the wind blowing or a door shutting.

“She’s hearing different things, but she doesn’t know what it is,,’ Lisa added.

Even so, Nora couldn’t be more thankful to be given the gift of sound, and right before Mother’s Day no less.

Lisa hopes to raise awareness about cochlear implants as well. She said her family never knew about them until recently.
