MSAD girls, boys keep rolling, sweep GPSD titles for 5th straight year

It came down to the very end for the Trojans girls, but the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf’s string of Great Plains Schools for the Deaf track titles continues.

Both MSAD’s girls and boys teams won the team titles at the GPSD meet Saturday, hosted by the Kansas School for the Deaf. The girls’ 100 points squeaked them by Missouri School for the deaf, while the boys won handily with 150 points. It’s the sixth straight title for the girls and fifth straight for the boys.

“We are proud of our athletes performing to the best of their abilities and overcoming exhaust and injuries,” coach Megan Frowick-Morgan said.

On the girls side, Corrie Ballentine won the 100-meter dash and took second in the 200 and 400. Chloe Robinson won the 800, was second in the 1,600 and third in the 3,200, while Kayla Mitchell took second in the discus and the 800.

The Trojans’ 4×400 team took third to earn enough points to seal the title in the final race.

The boys cruised to their fifth straight GPSD championship even without Junior Peters, who raced Friday night in the Hamline Elite Meet in St. Paul. Kyrell Cummings won the long and triple jumps and Josh Strom and Anthony Barger combined to take the top two places in both the 110 and 300 hurdles and high jump.

Juan Salgado was second in the 400 and Will Bondhus was second in the 1,600 and third in the 3,200, while Adam Rohde was fourth in the discus and second in the shot put. MSAD’s boys 4×100 and 4×200 relays both took first place as well.

It was the fifth straight year the Trojans swept the girls and boys GPSD meet titles. While the boys have been strong all season, including a Berg/Seeger title, it was a great performance from the girls team, which has just nine athletes on the roster.

MSAD is in town twice this week, starting with its hosting the 10th annual Leo Bond Meet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Ted Nelson Track with eight other teams competing.
