Teen an all-star at national quiz bowl

Milo Seal of Edmonds-Woodway High School was named a 2016 National All Star at the Gallaudet University Academic Bowl held April 23-26 in Washington, D.C.

The Edmonds Deaf and Hard of Hearing team reached the quarterfinals at the annual quiz bowl competition for students enrolled in programs for the deaf or hard of hearing. Along with the usual categories of current events, literature and science, the competition quizzes participants on deaf studies.

The local team advanced after placing second at a regional competition in March in California.

Trio of Cascade Spanish students win

Three students in Margarita Hurtado’s AP Spanish class at Cascade High School earned top awards in the annual Yo escribe en español literary contest. The contest is sponsored by the Center for Spanish studies, the state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, the University of Washington and the Education Office of the Embassy of Spain.

This year’s topic was related to a statement made by Sancho in Miguel de Cervantes’ “Don Quijote de la Mancha”: “Freedom is one of the most precious gifts that has been bestowed upon human beings.”

Donna Trejo, a junior, earned first place for narrative essay by a Spanish speaker, with junior Sandra Isabel Rojas taking second place. Steven Bishop, a senior, earned third place for narrative essay by a speaker of another language.

Rotary honors three Everett teens

The Rotary Club of Everett on April 19 honored its Everett-area students of the month.

Scott Pease, of Cascade High School, is a student leader and past representative on the Everett School Board.

Alexander Hotchko, of Sequoia High School, is an Eagle Scout who plans to start his studies in computer science at Everett Community College.

Sydney Campbell, of Everett High School, participates in the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program.

Explorer robotics club takes first at state

Two teams from the Mukilteo robotics club Trashcan to the Left paired up and took first place at the state-level VEX IQ Championship for middle schools held Feb. 27 at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. They were the only local teams to take part.

The Gertrude and 69 Cobra teams recently returned from international competition in Kentucky, where they placed 48th and 76th out of 200 teams.

The club consists of six Explorer Middle School students: Claudia Czech, Collin Dong, Andrew Le, Tyler Lo, Patrick Stiles and Alan Tsien.

Maltby’s McKerney a Regional Distinguished Principal

Maltby Elementary School Principal Bonnie McKerney was recently selected as one of 18 principals in the state to receive the Washington State Regional Distinguished Principal award from the Association of Washington School Principals. McKerney was honored by the Elementary School Principals Association of Washington for the Snohomish Region.

Elementary office manager receives regional honors

Northwest Educational Service District 189 selected Cindy Bartlette, office manager at Edmonds Elementary School, as the 2016 Regional Classified School Employee of the Year. Bartlette has been office manager for the past eight years and has been working in education for 18 years.

“She has inspired myself and staff and lets us know that together we can thrive by stretching ourselves professionally,” teacher Debbie Stratton said.
