WASHINGTON – Two Gallaudet University women’s soccer coaches will wear red, white and blue this summer representing Team USA in the 2016 Deaf World Cup in Italy from June 19-July 2. Bison women’s soccer head coach Liza Offreda and student-assistant coach Meghan Maiwald were recently named to Team USA’s roster for the fourth and third time, respectively.
This year’s selection is bittersweet for Offreda, who will enter her third season leading the Bison women’s soccer program this fall.
“It is always an honor to represent Team USA but this summer will be special because I plan on retiring after the tournament. Hanging up my cleats in Italy makes it even more special because it is where my father grew up and he is the reason why I am still playing today because he shared with me, the love of the game,” said Offreda. “It will be bittersweet playing my final game for Team USA in front of my family and friends and wrapping up a career filled with many wonderful memories.”
Team USA begins Deaf World Cup play on June 22 against Poland as part of Group B. There are seven nations in the 2016 Deaf World Cup. Team USA is the reigning Deaf World Cup champions and has won gold at the past three Deaflympics (2005, ’09, ’13).
Offreda hopes to add another championship to her resume before hanging up her cleats and leading the Bison program into their 2016 schedule.
“I look forward to coaching another fall season this year and sharing my experiences with my current players at Gallaudet,” added Offreda.
Gallaudet begins the 2016 season on Sept. 2 in Baltimore at Notre Dame of Maryland University.
