On our seventh anniversary, HEARD (Helping Educate to Advance the Rights of Deaf communities) is excited to announce our first-ever paid fellowship!
HEARD’s Fellowship program is open to Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, Hard of Hearing & Disabled people who also belong to at least one the following categories:
1) Youth (30 years old and younger);
2) Formerly Incarcerated (includes all forms of incarceration); or
3) A person directly affected by legal/prison systems (for example, family members of imprisoned people, survivors, etc.).
The Fellowship requires a commitment of fifteen hours per week for a six month period. The fellow will have an opportunity to work and learn with peers and professionals who are lawyers, advocates and organizers in various social justice movements, including the Deaf Access to Justice/Deaf In Prison Movement.
Our first fellowship grant is made possible by and through the generous gifts from the Jason Mastroianni Fund. Jason Mastroianni was a beloved son, brother, student & musician who had a passion for many things, including Deaf Access to Justice. While we are heartbroken that Jason is no longer here with us, HEARD is honored to be able to help carry his memory & legacy forward through this one-of-a-kind Fellowship.
HEARD will select up to two (2) Fellows from the pool of applicants. The Fellowship requires fifteen hours of work per week for six months. The Fellowship will begin mid-May 2018 and end mid-November 2018. There is the possibility of the Fellowship being extended depending on funds HEARD has available, and the Fellow’s performance in the first six months and future availability.
Priority will be given to applicants living in the states where HEARD has already established chapters (DC area, FL, LA, MN, NY & TX) but people from the entire United States are all encouraged to apply. Remote work is possible for very strong applicants.
If you have any questions about this Fellowship application, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line “HEARD Fellowship”.
HEARD Fellows will receive a $10,000 award for the six-month Fellowship period. If the Fellowship is extended, the award during the three-month extension period will be decided by agreement of the Fellowship Committee, HEARD’s Board of Directors & the Fellow themself.
