Patty didn’t learn ASL till 47 years old! She did learn four languages before learning American Sign Language (ASL). She knows Spanish, Fingerspelling, Puerto Rican Sign Language, and English. Later, she realized it’s important to know more languages than just one language. If someone wants to be part of the culture or the community, then he or she needs to learn language first. Without language, she or he will have a difficult time to fit in the community.

Thus, if you want to be part of the Deaf community, then you should at least learn how to sign in American Sign Language or any sign language form.
