Michael Hubbs was born Deaf in Omaha, NE. Relocating to Dallas, TX, he was raised by his grandmother. At 10 years old, he met speed skaters at the Westlake Skate Center (now Aloha Skate Center) in Mesquite, TX, and became fascinated with inline skating. Mother is a Japanese. Father is partly Indian (Apache) and partly German/Irish.

Serious Questions:

What got you into speedskating?
Started at 10. Went to a local roller skating rink. Saw 2 guys passing me just like a ghost. They were going really low, smooth and really fast. Fell in love with it. Became a serious speedskater at 12.

What your best memory of speedskating so far?
Going to Westlake Skater Center every Friday and Saturday night for roller skating fun. It was very popular at that time back in around 1995-1999. I was very young and loved to dance, competing against those real good speedskaters.

What is the most rewarding experience you have had and what made it so?
When I came back at 27 out of 10 years of not skating. The most rewarding experience was winning a silver medal in a Pro Division within 7 months. Hard work has really got me there. Staying focused was the best.

Who or what inspires you and why?
When I was little, Chad Hedrick, 5 Times Olympic Medalist. Very strong leadership. Never stops. Doesn’t complain. I’ve always thought he’s badass. Then when I made a switch to ice. Apolo Ohno, 8 Time Olympic Medalist and Most Decorated Winter Olympian In History. We almost had a similar life. We both weren’t raised by a mother. We both were born on the same year. We both have the same background such as Japanese and white mixed. We both used to skate inline and then made a transition to ice.

What are your future plans?
To make the top 3 at US Olympic Trial then head out for 2014 Winter Olympics and win 5 straight golds. Break 4 world records and win multiple golds at World Cup after 2014 Winter Olympics. Try again for 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics. Travel around the world as a motivational speaker plus set up Team Hubbs Foundation where it will help desired kids to achieve their dreams where their parents couldn’t afford to pay for their kids to play sports. Being active involved with the homeless shelter to help provide clothes, shoes, bed and food.

Completely Silly Random Questions:

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go first and why?

What nocturnal animal would you be if you had to choose and why?

You have the choice to live with a gorilla who knows sign language or a dog who sings lullabies, which do you choose?
Dog. I feel safer. Gorilla, I’ll be scared. Haha.

If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would buy?
A 10,000 square feet mansion and a Bugatti Veyron. (http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-shows/2012-geneva-auto-show/photos-2013-bugatti-veyron-164-grand-sport-vitesse-slide-6#slide-1)
