Step 1: Contacting the DWP

To make a claim for PIP, you first need to contact the DWP new claims telephone service on 0800 917 2222 (telephone) or 0800 917 7777 (textphone).

Lines will be open between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday. Calls are free from BT landlines and most mobiles; however, some mobile phone or non-BT landline providers may charge for the call. The call will only take a short time to complete.

During the call, you will need to pass a quick identity check and the DWP will ask questions to collect basic information such as your National Insurance Number, address, date of birth and the bank account details to be used for any benefit payments. It will speed up the call if you have all that information to hand before calling.

If you have difficulty using the phone, someone else can call on your behalf to make the claim, but you’ll need to show that you are present, too. If this isn’t possible, you can write to the DWP for a paper claim form. The DWP can only accept claims on an authorised form that is personalised to that particular claimant when issued.
