Full-Time American Sign Language Interpreter in India

Primary duties: Interpret for Deaf executive/ owner in a large family business setting. Interpreter will also be interpreting for family gatherings, phone calls and personal needs of the client. The ideal candidate is someone who can work in a wide variety of settings (intimate family settings as well high register meetings with local diplomats and high ranking government officials) Additionally the interpreter will be a mentor to newly recruited Indian interpreters learning ASL and possibly student interpreters from the United States. This is a business setting with a specialized vocabulary. Ideally we are seeking people with a willingness to adapt to a new cultural setting (foreign travel experience, experience living in another country, and/or working with a spoken language interpreter are highly encouraged). The family members are vegetarians and the interpreter must be able to adhere to this diet while eating with the family or working in a property that is owned by the family business. This position is a 6 day work week, but has a varied work load. It also will require periodic travel around India and possibly abroad. Certification is preferred, but not mandatory. 
One position needed immediately, the other to begin January 2014.
  • 5-10 years of interpreting experience -, recently ITP graduates, CODA’s and those with multiple language exposure encouraged to apply
  • Interpret effectively both receptively and expressively, and following/applying RID CPC
  • Certification is preferred, but not required. Experience, open-minded/flexible attitude and willingness to adapt in a multi-lingual/cultural environment is key
  • Valid US Passport required
  • Serve as a mentor and sign language / interpreting teacher to newly recruited Indian interpreters
  • Ability to travel frequently within India as well as to other countries on occasion.
  • Exhibit professionalism and demonstrated knowledge of business contexts, structure, and management with an ability to learn new business terms and models
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to diversity of language, culture, religions, and geographical locations
  • Embrace a high work-ethic and be flexible with schedule
  • Able to live in India for at least two years (strongly preferred – may consider a shorter term based on individual interviews)

US-based Salary will be attractive and commensurate with skills and experiences.
