I went shopping for a used car
I came across one I became interested in
I went to DMV to take written test with an interpreter
I failed DMV test
without interpreter- three times without interpreter
I asked the salesman if they would provide an interpreter,
and they wouldn’t provide one
..but I wouldn’t undestand the question,
asked the interpreter to slow down and repeat the question,
and the interpreter said no, time is running out
I had diffcult time trying to communicate with the salesman
the interpreter only had one hour limit,
which was not fair, as I failed the test
I got the car and went home
then when the billing came, it was higher than what I settled for
and they even threatened to take my car if I don’t pay on time
so I end up losing my car
but then, they kept sending me bills although I don’t have the car anymore
I came to DCARA seeking services
they provide DMV class with other deaf people
all signing ASL equally, which is my human right
I was informed that DMV will provide interpreter
Assisted me with looking for a lawyer
I learned how to pass the written test on my own
just as same as other hearing people without an interprter
With DCARA’s help, DMV arranged an interpreter for me
and I went back to DMV again
We discussed with the lawyer about how
the dealership refused to provide interpreter,
we end up winning the case, I was relieved
I had equal access, and passed the written test finally!
No more paying the demanding bills
