On Sunday, Spring Awakening hosted their last performance and ended on somewhat of a sad note. Yet, with all the praise, the love, and the passion that people have been writing about on the performance of Spring Awakening aka Deaf Awakening, there’s some speculation that the next step for the Deaf West Company is to take Spring Awakening to Broadway. The media had nothing but to sing of praises of Spring Awakening; from the LA Times to Broadway.com to Hollywood Reporter. Since May 21 to June 14, peoples’ lives were and still is being transformed by this show. It’s quite amazing to read what people have been saying on Twitter about this show. Even Lea Michelle loved the show. That’s saying something, isn’t it?
Yet, now the show is over, the biggest question that’s been on people’s mind is: Will Broadway bring Spring Awakening to Broadway?
For those of you who are not familiar with Spring Awakening, it is based off Frank Wedekind’s controversial 1981 expressionist play. The play features an electrifying score by Duncan Sheik and Steven Slater. Rock & Roll, sexuality and fusion of morality is most of theme of the play as it follows the lives of a group of teenagers.
Spring Awakening, has been following the imagination of their director, Michael Arden; the vision of Spencer Liff, their choreographer; the musical yet brilliant director, Jared Stein.
People via Twitter are taking up the hashtag #touchmeAGAIN in their call to bring Spring Awakening to Broadway. You should tweet #touchmeAGAIN if you think Spring Awakening should go to Broadway!
Some are saying that Spring Awakening should have a chance to go against some of the best shows in the world in New York City. Some of the best in the world. Just recently, the Tony Awards was hosted and it was quite surprising that Spring Awakening didn’t have a chance to show to the world what they have to offer to the world. It’s possible with the Stein’s credits being in Broadway productions of American Idiot and Hair that they might have a chance with Broadway. Granted, Spring Awakening has one of the second best venue in the United States performing in LA, yet, it’s somehow not the same as being in the best venue in the United States, Broadway, NY, USA.
So Broadway, what’s it gonna be? Are you gonna introduce some more amazing #deaftalent to the world? Do something that is out of your comfort zone? Or are you gonna stick to your comfort zone and only take in productions that you know will take tons of moolah? Will Broadway be bringing Spring Awakening to Broadway? Only in time will we ever know.
Maybe Deaf West said it best:
And they’ll walk on my arm through the distant night
and I won’t let them stray from my heart.
Through the Wind, through the Dark,
Through the Winter Light,
I will read all their dreams to the stars.
Happy Closing Night- It’s been wonderful!
You know what I love about the stars? They’re so many of them and they’re far away, yet, we can still dream, can’t we?
