Surat: At least 234 children in the age group of eight months to 10 years were operated free-of-cost for cochlear implant by a private ENT hospital in the Diamond City under the state Government’s school health scheme in the last one year.A get-together was organized by Shruti ENT Hospital at KP Trust Vidhya Sankul, Mukbadhir Vikas Trust School at Parle Point where the children from across south Gujarat, Vadodara, and Kheda were felicitated on Saturday.Shruti ENT Hospital is the only private hospital to sign an MoU with the state Government for treating the deaf and dumb children under the school health scheme in April 2015.As per the MoU, the cost of the device is borne by the government whereas the hospital performs surgery free-of-cost. The post-operative therapy cost and the cost of the operation material are provided by the city-based Chinmaya Public Charitable Trust.”Until now, the patients were not able to afford the expenses of the operation. The only problem was that the technology was brought in at a very high cost.
The device itself being more than Rs5.5 lakh. The additional cost for the surgical procedure and post-operative speech therapy add another Rs1 lakh to the expenses,” said Dr Saumitra Shah of Shruti ENT Hospital.Dr Shah said, “The state government has done a great work.
