GU women's track and field has strong showing at New Captains Classic

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Gallaudet University men’s track and field team spent the past two days here competing in the New Captains Classic hosted by Christopher Newport University. No team scores were kept for the NCAA Division III teams in competition but personal records were set by the Bison.

Sophomore Lawjen Ashmore (Fairbanks, Alaska) came close to breaking a school record in the 400-meter dash as she crossed the finish line with a time of 1 minute and 0.41 seconds. She was three-tenths of a second off the school record of 1:00.14 set in 1981. Ashmore finished 15th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.29 seconds and ran a leg in the fifth-place 4×100-meter relay team (52.21 seconds) and the fourth-place 4×400-meter relay team (4:11.89).

Senior Lindsey Corthell (Orlando, Fla.) finished fourth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (8:33.78) and ran a leg in the 4×400-meter relay. Junior Shellane McKitty (Yonkers, N.Y.) was a part of both 4×100 and 4×400 meter relay teams and finished in 31st place in the 200-meter dash (27.61 seconds) and 23rd in the 400-meter dash (1:03.37).

Sophomore Kori Koss (Green Bay, Wis.) participated in the 4×100-meter relay team and was 25th in the 100-meter dash (14.27 seconds). She also finished in seventh place in both the 100-meter hurdles (17.37 seconds) and the 400-meter hurdles (1:15.24).


  • Freshman Saria Webb (Duncanville, Texas) finished 18th in the 100-meter dash (13.43 seconds), 35th in the 200-meter dash (28.34 seconds)
  • Sophomore Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.) was 26th in the 100-meter dash (14.39 seconds) and ninth in the high-jump (1.43 meters)
  • Freshman Fatuma Ali (Tucson, Ariz.) finished 28th in the 100-meter dash (15.01 seconds), 40th in the 200-meter dash (31.18 seconds) and 30th in the 400-meter dash (1:12.57)
  • Junior Ivy Sahneyah (First Mesa, Ariz.) was 25th in the 1,500-meter run (6:53.86) and the 5,000-meter dash (26:38.58)

Gallaudet will next travel north to Baltimore to participate in the two-day Morgan State Legacy Meet next Friday and Saturday (April 22-23).
