Woburn resident receives Rochester Institute of Technology Distinguished Alumni Award

WOBURN — Barbara Wood, of Woburn, is the recipient of a 2016 Rochester Institute of Technology Distinguished Alumni Award.

Wood, who graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1975 with a degree in social work, was the former CEO of the Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Massachusetts, Colorado and New Mexico.

After working in an official capacity for three commissions, Wood has returned home to Massachusetts and is still working just as hard for the deaf and hard of hearing community as when she started 30 years ago, organizing voter drives and continuing to lobby the state legislature. She speaks up and fights for improved access for all members of the community.

Each year, RIT’s leaders select one graduate from each college who represents the best of RIT. This year, RIT honors 10 distinguished alumni who stand out among the more than 118,000 accomplished alumni. The awards will be presented April 15.
