Monday night’s episode of Dancing With the Stars featured yet another scoring error, leading many fans to wonder what’s going on.
When judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli were scoring Nyle DiMarco and Peta Murgatroyd, there was a scoring dispute. While Tonioli held up his “10” paddle, it was quickly revealed that the judge’s score was actually a “9.”
To clarify, the judges reveal their scores to Goodman right after the couple is done dancing and he writes them down and gives the card to producers. The producers are then able to put up graphics revealing the judges’ scores while they hold up their paddles. By DWTS rules, the scores given to producers are the ones that count. So even if a judge randomly changes their mind, the first score is what matters.
This wasn’t the first time this season DiMarco was involved in a scoring mishap. A few weeks ago, Tonioli and guest judge Maks Chmerkovskiy held up their “10” paddles after DiMarco and Murgatroyd’s dance. However, it was later revealed that those 10s were supposed to be 9s.
DiMarco spoke with reporters after the show on Monday, revealing that he wasn’t too concerned.
“I have no idea what happened,” DiMarco admitted, “but I’m going to take it as a compliment. I still got two 9s and a 10.”
One of the production members spoke with TVGuide.com, saying, “That’s the thing about live TV. You just never know.”
Meanwhile, DiMarco and Murgatroyd have become major contenders to win the Mirrorball trophy. The couple has stunned viewers from the beginning, with DiMarco dancing extremely well despite being completely deaf. The couple has now made it to the Final 6, with only a few more weeks to go until the finals. It remains to be seen if the couple will make it all the way to the end and win that coveted Mirrorball trophy.
Dancing with the Stars airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
