Is Nyle Really as Cocky as ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Makes Him Seem?
Thursday, May 05, 2016
During rehearsals of the said episode, Nyle claimed that he didn’t think his fellow celeb dancers were serious competition, and that his biggest threat was actually dance pro Val Chmerkovskiy.
After his Quickstep performance inspired by The Mask, Len Goodman called him out for the Val comments.
“You’re a good dancer, but don’t start saying ‘I’m as good as Val,'” he said. “You’re just annoying people.”
Though Nyle took the comments in good grace, the way he was perceived on DWTS was hard to take for the deaf model.
“So much happened in our package this past Monday on the live show, and I feel like it was kind of a negative perspective of me,” the America’s Next Top Model winner said. “It showed me as kind of being arrogant and cocky, and that’s not who I am.”
“It was so hard for me to say anything because I was misperceived. And being deaf and also being a minority, I have a huge responsibility to represent the deaf community well,” he added. “And, on top of that, I also have my own foundation and I’m the face of that foundation and I can’t have that image.”
Amid all the bashing, Nyle took to Twitter to explain why he compared himself to Val, who also complimented the deaf model.
Like playing a sport as a newbie, you would study Professionals as if they’re “to beat”… Only to push yourself.
This is why I study Val.

Do you think Nyle’s confidence was just confused as arrogance?
