A groundbreaking first aired on US TV overnight – the popular family viewing favourite Dancing With The Stars saw its first same-sex dance routine in its 22-season history.

Model and disability activist Nyle DiMarco – who is deaf, and recently came out as “sexually-fluid” on Twitter after winning last season of Tyra Banks’ America’s Next Top Model – was paired with partner Keo Motsepe for a lusty topless tango.

“This is a Dancing With The Stars first, having same-sex dancing,” he said of the performance, which also saw Fuller House‘s Jodie Sweetin taking the floor with DiMarco’s instructor Peta Murgatroyd.

Later in the episode, DiMarco also brought the judges to tears with a performance that touched on his own personal experience with deafness: midway through a paso doble routine to Panic At The Disco’s ‘Victorious’, the music cut out, reminding viewers what it’s like for DiMarco to dance without hearing any audio cues.

“It’s one of those moments – a Dancing With The Stars classic that no one will ever forget,’ judge Bruno Tonioli said, poetically adding that the silent portion of the routine was “like watching five men dancing to the beat of a single heart, connected by the soul.”

The silent section of the dance begins around the 1.05 mark:

DiMarco shared a wonderful tweet about the experience overnight, saying “There is power in silence.”
