On June 12, theater lovers will get to see some of the biggest stars on Broadway perform without having to pay for a ticket. The 70th annual Tony Awards will host performances from 10 shows on the Great White Way. And considering the way some of these musicals sell out, it may be your only chance to see these casts.
The awards show revealed Wednesday that they’ll have a selection of Broadway casts. To the surprise of absolutely no one, “Hamilton” is on the list. The casts of “Shuffle Along,” “She Loves Me,” “School of Rock,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “The Color Purple” and “Bright Star” will also grace the stage at New York’s famed Beacon Theater. The “Waitress” and “On Your Feet!” casts will also perform, but they’ll have special guests: Composer and lyricist Sara Bareilles will join the former while singer Gloria Estefan joins the latter.
The cast of “Spring Awakening” will also perform at the 2016 Tony Awards, much to the relief of the show’s fans. The revival, which incorporated American Sign Language, had a limited run that ended in January. Deaf West Theatre is doing a Kickstarter campaign to fund the cast’s Tony Awards performance. The production company explained that much of the cast is spread throughout the country and needs to fly back, and rehearsal space would have to be rented because the show isn’t in a theater anymore.
“This week, the cast is coming together. We’ll have rehearsals and get ready for the big night. But we still need to hit that goal,” Deaf West artistic director DJ Kurs explained in a video. “So tell your friends and family. This will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, a historic moment to showcase our beautiful language and culture on a worldwide televised event.”
Though the cast is confirmed to appear on the Tony Awards, the Kickstarter campaign doesn’t end until Saturday, one day before the ceremony. Presumably, the Kickstarter is to reimburse people for costs, but producers haven’t explicitly said that. Variety reports that those involved with the production have been booking everything they need on credit. Luckily, the crowdfunding campaign hit its goal Wednesday.
