Christiania, also known as Freetown Christiania is a self-proclaimed autonomous neighborhood of about 850 residents, covering 34 hectares (84 acres) in the borough of Christianshavn in the Danish capital city of Copenhagen.
Christiania has been a source of controversy since its creation in a squatted military area in 1971. Authorities tolerated its cannabis trade until 2004. In the years following 2004, measures for normalizing the legal status of the community led to conflicts, police raids and negotiations.
Some cannabis dealers in Christiania are also selling illegal drugs and got notoriety by their aggressive behavior, regularly trying to forbid tourists to take photos in otherwise public areas. Many of them are also quite pushy and become very hostile if it turns out that visitors aren’t interested in buying any drugs.
