The Little Mermaid is undoubtedly one of the most photographed girls in the world – and is a legendary symbol and landmark for Copenhagen – and the number one tourist attraction in Denmark with over 1 million visitors every year.
In 1989 Walt Disney Pictures produced an animated version of the Little Mermaid based on the fairy tale of the same name by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen.
The story of The Little Mermaid is written by famed Danish fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen – and published for the first time in 1837. The sad and heart-wrenching story, in brief, is about a mermaid at the age of 15 – who fell in love with a prince she rescued from drowning. And then lost her tail to the evil sea witch – when she tried to win the prince. Unfortunately, she transformed into cold, deadly sea foam for the rest of her life.
By the way, it is the small and unimposing statue is a Copenhagen icon and has been a major tourist attraction since 1913.
In recent decades it has become a favorite target for defacement by vandals and political activists. Sad isn’t it?
