A funny & heartouching video of John Wilson and Talila “TL” Lewis’ first meeting since his return home. John received a HEARD t-shirt and an award from HEARD.

John spent 25 years in prison & TL worked on his case for 12 years to try to get him out and prove his innocence. TL continues to work with a group of advocates and attorneys to prove his innocence.

John and his family and team of advocates is working hard to support him with this huge transition. We appreciate everyone’s donations and offers of thoughts and support.

1.5 minute video of John Wilson at his family’s home with HEARD advocates. He accepts several gifts from HEARD and shares some thoughts about HEARD. The room has a green wall and has sunlight coming in.

Video opens John Wilson holding an award from HEARD that his family received in his honor at HEARD’s 8th anniversary in February due to the unexpected delay of his release. The award says John Wilson, In honor of your commitment to HEARD & in celebration of your reunification with your loved ones. February 18, 2019.

Cartoons are playing in the background

John passes the award to Talila “TL” Lewis so he can continue opening his gifts in his lap. TL holds the award up to the camera and the camera focuses on the small print on the award. Camera flashes back to John Wilson who was trying to discuss work and advocacy saying:

TL interrupts John with a question unrelated to advocacy: “Mind sharing what you are up to?

John replies in sign and voice: “ I helped my grandson take care of his . . . BAD DAY! BIG SHIT! Oh my … A lot of [shakes head with shock at what he saw and puts hands on head laughing]

I had to clean it up quick before TL got here. I got it all cleaned up! Now my son is back there. Looks over shoulder and smiles.

Camera pans over to see small child watching the interaction shyly from over the counter.

Video edited to cut out John opening his gift. Video cuts back on to see John finally getting into this package.

He is thrilled! And says:

Oh yeahhhh! YES! That’s what I need. As he holds up a shirt with HEARD’s logo on it. He puts it back in his lap, looks down and feels the words HEARD. He is smiling really big.

TL asks John to explain why this shirt is just what he needed. John and TL have lots of conversation. Most is edited out but ends up with these final thoughts on HEARD by John Wilson:

. . . HEARD’s been doing good work for many years.More people are coming to HEARD & learning about HEARD. HEARD is the best in the world & the word is out!

Camera pans back to TL concerned asking is the shirt big enough.

John without hesitation says:

It’s perfect. Perfect. Yeah. I love it.

He pauses again to look at the shirt and unprompted says again: I love it. It’s perfect. Yeah.

Pauses again: Yeah. Perfect. Perfect.

Video ends with John holding the shirt up and smiling saying “perfect”.

Video fades to black and image of TL and John comes up. Image description courtesy of TL:

[image of Talila “TL” Lewis, a Black genderfluid youngish person with one arm around an older Black man, John Wilson, whose eyebrows and goatee are speckled with gray hair. They are both wearing white tees with John Wilson’s having bright Disney characters dressed in baggy clothes on it. TL has on a bright blue hoodie and flashes the peace sign with the hand around John’s neck. They are both smiling widely and there is a brick home in the background.]

Image fades away and black screen pops up with white words that says: HEARD IS A VOLUNTEER-DEPENDENT ORGANIZATION THAT FOCUSES ON ENDING ABUSE AND IMPRISONMENT OF DEAF AND DISABLED PEOPLE.
