HEARD has been sharing a lot of info about wrongful convictions of deaf/disabled people and about the case of a Deaf man named Felix Garcia.

Felix Garcia is a DeafDisabled Latinx man who was wrongfully convicted & incarcerated. Sadly, Felix has been in prison since 1981.

The good news is the State Attorney Andrew H. Warren has a chance to free Felix Garcia.

The State Attorneys’ Office Conviction Review Unit (CRU) is reviewing Felix’s wrongful conviction application. Andrew Warren will make the final decision very soon. The review test/process is extremely difficult to succeed. We need the community to let Andrew Warren know that we are depending on him to make the right decision.

Tomorrow, December 27, 2019, please take a few minutes to call or email Andrew Warren. Everyone can contact Attorney Warren, but we especially are looking for Florida residents and Hillsborough County, FL residents to contact him at this email address or phone number

This call/email can take you less than two minutes and could help Felix greatly. Let Attorney Warren know your concerns about Felix’s case and the cases of other Deaf/Disabled people.

After you call, please share on social media why you support Felix using #DeafWrongfulConviction and #FreeFelixGarcia.

Here is a short script you can use:

Subject: correct the wrongful conviction of Felix Garcia & prevent wrongful convictions of deaf/disabled people

Dear State Attorney Andrew Warren:

My name is _[first & last name]__. I live in ___[town, city, state]___. I have been following the wrongful conviction case of Felix Garcia with great concern about injustices that continue to happen to deaf/disabled people in the criminal legal system.

You were elected because you promised to reform the criminal legal system–to increase justice and community engagement, and most importantly you promised to set up a Conviction Review Unit to help free wrongfully convicted people.

The justice system continues to fail deaf/disabled people at every turn. Felix Garcia’s case is just one example of systemic failures in the legal system that lead to deaf/disabled people being wrongfully arrested and convicted, and receiving harsher sentences, and then experiencing more abuse, isolation and neglect in this nation’s prisons.

As you approach re-election in 2020, please make good on your promise to right the wrongs of the criminal legal system. Felix has spent nearly 40 years in prison for a crime that he has an airtight alibi for and that his brother has admitted to committing. Please make the right decision and help return Felix Garcia to his community.

Thank you for your time and earnest consideration.

Sincerely,
[insert your name]
