Image description: A white young man is standing in front of a orangish/whitish wall. He is wearing a white T-shirt, grey-ish pants, and a brown belt.

Purpose: I translated this song to promote inner peace in each one of us, which will lead to world peace. I remember this song from my middle school years in a Jewish congregation. The song is certainly for everyone, regardless of religion.

Translation notes: I expanded on the meaning in the first stanza, but then shortened it in the reprise. I also created a new sign for “Shalom” (showing the spirit being freed) in this song. If you are going to sign “Shalom” in an everyday setting, the actual sign would be something resembling a greeting or the word “peace.”

Title: Not By Might, Not By Power

Author: Debbie Friedman

English text:

Not by might, & not by power,But by spirit alone
Shall we all live in peace.

Not by might, & not by power,But by spirit alone
Shall we all live in peace.

The children sing,
The children dreamAnd their tears may fall,
But we’ll hear them call
And another song will rise,
Another song will rise,
Another will rise.
Not by might, not by power, shalom!
