Image description: A white young man is standing in front of a orangish/whitish wall. He is wearing a white T-shirt, grey-ish pants, and a brown belt. He is signing “TORCH.”
Purpose: I created this poem to celebrate the power of giving and sharing. I also wanted to illustrate the ability of ASL to create sophisticated metaphors, such as raising people’s inner flags.
Keywords: Torch, darkness, candle, together, flag, celebrate, win, king, poor, rich, shine
Synopsis: The poem opens with a line of people following a torchbearer (presumably a wannabe leader) through a dark world, only to have the torch blown out by the wind. Then, a comment is made that the flame (inner and outer) could have been previously distributed among the people. In the second part, the speaker comments that people think there is only one winner when, in fact, by uplifting others, we all win together. The metaphor used is an inner flag being raised, which works well with the etymology of the ASL signs “celebrate” and “win”, representing the hand holding a flag. In the third part, the speaker comments that people are oblivious to their internal wealth, which grows by helping others and surpasses the king’s external wealth. The speaker calls for people to share their wealth together. Then, the poem circles back to the beginning, where the dark world is now brightening up thanks to the light among the people. Finally, the speaker beckons people to shine together.
