The WFD wishes to inform its Ordinary Members about the upcoming elections to the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
The elections will be held on 29 June 2020 in New York, at the 21st meeting of States parties to the CEDAW Convention..
The WFD would like to encourage its Ordinary Members to review the candidates from their country to see if they have awareness of deaf women’s issues, of sign language, and of the issues of women with disabilities.
About the elections
Members of the CEDAW Committee are elected States parties from among nationals of that country. Members are elected for a term of four years.
6 March 2020: Nominations are open to this date. A list of candidates will appear on the webpage. The states of the Bahamas, France, Ghana, Jordan, Lebanon, Lithuania, Mauritania, Mexico, Nepal, the Netherlands, Philippines and Uganda have already submitted a candidate. If you are from these countries, please do check who the nominee is and their work with deaf people in your country.
Between 6 March – 29 June 2020. NGOS can lobby governments and missions to vote for their candidate and candidates that best fulfill the criteria. CVs and bios of the nominees will be made available on the OHCHR website
29 June 2020: CEDAW States Parties Meeting. Where states parties will vote through secret ballot to either re-elect committee members whose terms expire in 2020 and who have been nominated by their states or elect new members.
