hearing aids (really, amplifiers) are now going to be on the over-the-counter market.
the issue with this is 1) calling them hearing aids when they’re kinda ~*not really*~ and 2) this could cause some problems in the long run when one is consistently wearing a device not meant for their hearing which means they may find they’re not hearing/understanding properly and also, could cause some more damage later on.
now it’s pretty obvious that healthcare in the united states is terrible and a lot of insurance companies don’t cover hearing aids (i had to get mine through VR) and that’s why this is going to seem like the more accessible option. this is a much longer conversation for a youtube video but i at least wanted people to know what they’re getting into if they do decide to buy these things.
and also for hearing people to stop sharing this tweet as if they’re actually hearing aids. it’s not their fault. they’re not given the proper information. but now hopefully you’ll know!
