I wanted to add on some thoughts to bluejay19xx recent IG Reel and TikTok about how hearing people have a tendency to think deaf people get mad at hearing people for not learning ASL but then getting mad at people for learning ASL (or sign language in general, really).
Absolutely, deaf people want hearing people to learn sign language. What we don’t want is people who can barely put together two sentences or have only done nonsensical song covers on TikTok attempting to teach it. We don’t want people learning from these people who go viral for the bare minimum while deaf creators and teachers are ignored and not hired for things they’re actually qualified for.
We just want you to be taught correctly. Stop trying to confuse the two.
